Overview

Construction includes the building of commercial, industrial, and residential buildings and engineering projects like roads, bridges, and utility systems. Construction includes both new construction and remodeling, additions, maintenance, and repairs.

Mining is one industry that relies heavily on similar, or the same, skills, experiences, and certifications as construction. As such both career fields are grouped together on this Site.

Positions in the construction industry range from unskilled laborers to skilled and specialized positions that require specific education, training, and certifications, including skilled trades focused on construction of specialized systems including carpentry, electrical, heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. Experience can be gained through apprenticeship programs as well.

What about in Alaska?

Many of Alaska’s construction opportunities are in the energy sector, with a focus on development of roads, mines, and pipeline systems. There are both year-round and seasonal construction jobs available. Many projects in the state include summer field seasons that include construction activities.

Mining is a cornerstone of Alaska’s economy. Many of Alaska’s construction projects are performed to support the mining industry. Alaska currently has six large operating mines, with more planned in the coming years. Currently, Alaska's mining industry supports over 4,000 jobs, over half of which are in rural Alaska.
